Aboubakary Shaban Katwira, known professionally as Q Chief (or Q Chilla), is a pioneer of Tanzanian Bongo Flava and Afrobeat. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s, becoming one of the first local artists to have his music played in major nightclubs like Billcanas, a feat that helped the nascent genre gain mainstream acceptance.
A unique ability to blend traditional African rhythms with soulful R&B melodies defined his career. Early hits such as "Si Ulinikataa", "Uhali Gani", and "Nikilala Naota" (featuring Lady Jaydee) transformed him into a household name across East Africa. His vocal prowess earned him several nicknames, including "Savimbi", reflecting his bold and influential presence in the Bongo Flava genre.
Q Chief’s journey experienced significant turbulence. Over the years, he has faced personal struggles with substance abuse, financial instability, and internal industry conflicts that led to several lengthy hiatuses. Despite these setbacks, he remains a symbol of resilience. He has frequently attempted to reinvent himself, migrating between Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda to find fresh management and creative inspiration.
In recent years, Q Chief has experienced an artistic resurgence. In 2023, he released his studio album The “Last Meal,” which featured tracks like "Roll Up" and "Sijui". His 2024 reunion with long-time collaborator TID for the single "Wali Nazi" marked a major nostalgia-driven comeback for fans. Continuing this momentum into 2025, he released "Tetere" featuring Christian Bella and "Ebenezer" with Professor Jay.
